One sentence
Tankbar is a cozy desktop aquarium that lives on your Windows taskbar, where every fish has its own genes and is painted live by code.
One paragraph
Tankbar is a tiny living aquarium that sits on (or just above) your Windows taskbar while you work. Hatch and breed fish from 47 species, each painted live from its genes across 36 patterns and 8 rare traits, so every fish is one of a kind. Decorate cozy tanks across 10 biomes, watch the water follow your real clock from sunny afternoons to glowing nights, and unwind to three procedural radio stations. It is offline-first and fair by design: every odd is shown, breeding never consumes your fish, and there are no ads, microtransactions or loot boxes. One purchase, free updates for everyone who owns it, and an optional cosmetic Supporter Pack planned for launch day.
Press release body
Tankbar sits quietly along the bottom of your screen: a strip of warm water with a few little fish in it. Click the water and food flakes drift down while the greedy fish race for them. Hover over a fish and it wiggles happily; hover over a puffer and it puffs. Curious fish follow your cursor. Every so often a pearl bubble drifts up, and if you are too busy to pop it, it collects itself.
Underneath the coziness is a genetics engine. Each fish carries a genome (species, pattern, three color genes, size, fin length and traits), and the game paints it live, frame by frame. There are no sprite sheets and no recolors. Breed two fish and the Nursery shows you the exact odds before you confirm. Parents are never used up, and nothing is ever secretly rerolled.
When it is time to work, start a Focus Tide. A tide line rises, the music softens, and your fish earn double pearls until you are done. The music comes from three procedural radio stations, Lo-fi Reef, Deep Calm and Rainy Glass, composed live on your computer.
Tankbar also has an optional online mode called the Harbor, planned for launch and signed in with the Steam account that owns the game: gifts that arrive as a box on the sand, tank visits, Fish Shows judged half by genes and half by player votes, and a weekly community Tide. There is no player market: fish are for keeping and giving. Your tank never depends on the Harbor.
Tankbar is a one-time purchase. No ads, no microtransactions, no loot boxes, no energy meters. An optional cosmetic Supporter Pack is planned for launch day for anyone who would like to say thanks. Just fish.
What it is
Dock it on the taskbar, above it, along the top edge, or float it anywhere, with adjustable height, width and opacity. Click-through Ghost mode keeps it out of your way.
Distinct body plans from guppies and koi to axolotls, leafy seadragons, manta rays and a pocket-sized whale shark. No sprite sheets.
36 patterns, 8 rare traits (up to the elusive Aurora), continuous color genes, parents and children on every fish card, and friendships that raise the chance of mutations.
Odds are shown before every egg and every pairing. Breeding never consumes parents, letting a fish go always asks you to confirm, favorite-lock protects your best fish, and the Reserve Pond has no cap.
From Sunlit Shallows to Nebula Reef, tiny castles to lighthouses, all hand-placeable and tintable. 6 of the decorations are earned rather than bought.
Dawn, day, dusk and night, with bioluminescent glow after dark, plus clear skies, rain, snow, petals, auroras and distant storms.
Focus sessions of 15, 25, 45 or 60 minutes with double pearls while the tide is in, rewards when you finish, an achievement for finishing any seven, and no penalty for stopping early.
Lo-fi Reef, Deep Calm and Rainy Glass, composed live by the game with a little difference every time. Not pre-recorded.
Gifts (a fish or a daily pearl pouch, with a preset phrase if you like) that arrive as a box on the sand, Fish Shows, tank visits and a weekly community Tide, with Steam sign-in. Optional, no player market, and planned for launch.
Offline-first saves with automatic backups, a 15, 30 or 60 fps cap, low-detail mode, pauses when hidden, locked or asleep, UI scale from 75 to 200 percent, Reduce motion, and rarity gems that use a shape and a written name as well as color.
Why it exists
Tankbar started in 2026 as a wish list gathered from what players of desktop companion games kept asking for: don’t make it always-online, don’t let me lose a fish to a misclick, show me the odds, keep the ads out, let me interact more, give me night and weather, and keep it light on my PC.
The design pillars are short: cozy, never punishing; alive at a glance; fair and transparent; respect the desktop.
Tankbar is made in Denmark.

Code and some text were written with AI help (Anthropic’s Claude) and reviewed by the developer, and translations are AI-assisted too. All art and music are procedural code, with no image or music generators.
Tankbar is written in TypeScript. The developer wrote it with the help of an AI coding assistant (Anthropic’s Claude), directing, testing and reviewing every part.
Some in-game text, such as suggested fish names, loading tips and item descriptions, and parts of the store text were drafted with the same assistant, then edited by the developer.
The Chinese, Japanese and Korean game text planned for 1.1 is translated with AI assistance, using a style guide, a glossary and a review pass. The translated pages of this website are AI-assisted and checked against a glossary.
No image, video or voice generation models were used. Every fish, plant, decoration and environment is drawn procedurally by the game’s own code while you play. Screenshots and footage are captured from the game itself.
No music generation models were used. The radio stations and every sound effect are synthesized live on your computer by the game’s code.
The game does not use any AI model while you play.
Creators
Streaming Tankbar and monetizing videos of it is welcome on any platform. No need to ask.
Streams, reviews, let’s plays and edits are all fine, monetized or not.
The in-game radio is composed live by the game, and you can use it in your Tankbar videos and streams.
Turn on Ghost mode (Ctrl+Alt+G) so clicks pass through the tank, and add the Tankbar window as a Window Capture source in OBS. Capture setups vary, so do a quick test first. The free browser demo works for capture too. A streamer mode, where chat names your fish, is planned for launch or soon after.
