The short version
- Tankbar works offline. Your tank, your fish and your settings are saved on your own device. The developer can’t see them.
- No analytics, ads or trackers. The game doesn’t phone home, and neither does this website.
- The Harbor is optional. It is off until you switch it on. If you do, only what the Harbor needs to work is stored: your Steam ID (only to confirm you own Tankbar), a keeper number, the display name you choose, your friend code and friends list, snapshots of your tank and show fish, show entries and votes, gifts and snacks, and your weekly focus minutes.
- Never asked for: your real name, email address, contacts, location or payment details. Steam handles purchases.
- You can delete your Harbor data yourself in Settings at any time, or ask the developer to.
This website
The Tankbar website is a plain static site. Here is what it does, and does not do:
- No cookies. The site does not set or read cookies.
- No analytics and no tracking. There are no analytics scripts, tracking pixels, ad networks or social-media widgets.
- No outside fonts. The Nunito typeface is hosted on the site itself, so your browser doesn’t contact a font service.
- The free demo saves in your browser. The demo keeps your tank in your browser’s local storage (localStorage) for this website, together with a few rolling backups and small interface settings. It stays on your device and isn’t sent anywhere. Clearing this site’s data in your browser deletes it. Use Settings → Save data → Export save in the demo to keep a copy.
- Server logs. Like any web host, whoever hosts this site may keep ordinary access logs (for example the IP address, time and page requested). The site itself doesn’t read them. The hosting arrangement will be described here once it is final.
- Links out. Links to other sites, such as Steam, are governed by those sites’ own privacy policies.
1. Who is responsible
The data controller is the developer of Tankbar, based in Denmark. The developer’s legal name, postal address and privacy contact email will be published here before release. See the notice at the top of this page.
2. Data that stays on your device
This data stays on your computer unless you choose to send it somewhere (for example by exporting a save and emailing it with a bug report), or turn on Steam Cloud for the full game (planned), which syncs your save through Steam.
| What | Where (Windows app) | Where (browser demo) |
|---|---|---|
| Your game save (fish, tank, progress, settings) | %APPDATA%\Tankbar\save.json | Browser local storage for the demo’s site |
| Automatic backups of your save | %APPDATA%\Tankbar\backups\ | Browser local storage |
| Window and dock position | %APPDATA%\Tankbar\shell.json | Not applicable |
| Photos you take in photo mode | Pictures\Tankbar\ | Downloaded by your browser |
| Save files you export | Wherever you choose | Wherever you choose |
To delete it, uninstall the game and delete the %APPDATA%\Tankbar folder, or clear the demo site’s data in your browser. Settings → Save data → Start over also resets your tank (a backup is kept).
With Steam Cloud on, your save syncs through Steam. That copy is handled by Valve under the Steam Privacy Policy, and the developer cannot see it.
3. Data processed if you use the Harbor
The Harbor is the optional online mode (Fish Shows, tank visits, gifts, snacks, The Tide and leaderboards). When you switch it on, the Harbor uses the Steam account that owns Tankbar, and sends the following to the Harbor server:
| Data | Why | Who can see it |
|---|---|---|
| Steam ID and keeper number, plus when the account was created | To confirm you own Tankbar and recognize your account | Only the server |
| Display name (chosen by you; please don’t use your real name) | To show who owns a tank or show entry | Other Harbor players |
| Friend code, friends list and when you were last online | To let you add friends, visit and send gifts | You and your friends |
| Tank snapshot: tank name, biome, decoration layout, up to 30 display fish (their genes, names and generation), your level and Dex count | For tank visits and leaderboards | Other Harbor players |
| Fish Show entries: a snapshot of the fish you enter and its scores | To run Fish Shows | Other Harbor players |
| Votes: which of two show entries you preferred | To calculate audience scores | Only the server (results are shown in aggregate) |
| Gifts and inbox items: fish or pearls sent, plus the preset phrase you pick to go with them (The Harbor has no free-text messages at 1.0) | To deliver gifts | You and the recipient |
| Friend requests, blocks and reports: who you asked, blocked or reported, and the moderation review queue | To keep the Harbor safe and respect your choices | You; the developer, for reports |
| Seal ledger: each sealed fish’s Seal No., genes and history | To prove sealed fish are genuine and to run the Finest boards | Other Harbor players can see a sealed fish’s record |
| Snacks: whose tank you left a snack in and on which day (the tank’s owner gets an inbox note with your display name) | To deliver the once-a-day snack bonus and enforce the daily limit | You and the tank owner |
| Focus minutes contributed to The Tide (weekly totals) | To run the weekly community goal and its reward | Shown in aggregate |
| Leaderboard values: Dex completion, level, show wins | Leaderboards | Other Harbor players |
| Technical data: IP address, request times and error logs | Security, abuse prevention, rate limiting, keeping the service running | Only the developer and the hosting provider |
Legal bases (GDPR Art. 6): providing the Harbor features you asked for (contract, Art. 6(1)(b)); keeping the Harbor secure and fair, including abuse prevention and logs (legitimate interests, Art. 6(1)(f)).
The developer doesn’t sell your data, use it for advertising, profile you, or make automated decisions with legal effects. Show scoring is automatic, but it only decides fish show placements.
4. Who else processes data
- Harbor hosting: a hosting provider that will be named here before release, with servers in a region that will also be named. They process Harbor data on the developer’s behalf under a data processing agreement. If the servers are outside the EEA, the transfer safeguard (for example EU Standard Contractual Clauses) will be described here.
- Steam (Valve Corporation): purchases, downloads and your Steam account are handled by Valve under the Steam Privacy Policy. The developer receives only aggregate sales and store statistics.
- Other websites that host the demo: if the browser demo is offered on another website, such as itch.io, that website’s own privacy policy applies to it. The demo itself doesn’t send data anywhere.
5. How long Harbor data is kept
- Your Harbor account (keeper number, display name, friend code, friends, tank snapshot, level, Dex count and show-win count): kept while your account exists, until you delete it. Accounts that haven’t connected for 24 months are deleted automatically. A keeper who only switched the Harbor off, and still holds sealed fish, keeps them.
- Inbox items (returned fish, gifts, snacks, prizes): deleted 30 days after you claim them, or after 1 year if unclaimed. A sealed fish in an unclaimed item is never lost: it returns to your ledger so you can recover it.
- Fish Shows (entries, scores, rankings): deleted 21 days after the show ends. Your total number of show wins stays on your profile. Vote pairs are deleted within a day.
- The Tide (your weekly focus minutes): kept for 8 weeks.
- Server logs (IP addresses): kept for a period that will be confirmed with the hosting provider and published here before release.
6. Your rights
You can ask to access, correct, delete or export your Harbor data, to restrict its use, or to object to processing based on legitimate interests. You can rename yourself in-game at any time.
To delete your Harbor profile and the data listed above, use Settings → World → Delete my Harbor data. It takes effect right away. If you can’t get into the game, email the privacy contact (address to be published before release) with your friend code and the data will be deleted within one month. Deleting Harbor data never affects the tank saved on your own device. The seal ledger (Seal No. and history) is a retained record, and how it is handled after deletion will be confirmed before release. We do not promise full erasure of it yet.
You can also complain to the Danish Data Protection Agency (Datatilsynet, datatilsynet.dk) or to the data protection authority where you live.
7. Children
Tankbar contains no ads and no in-game purchases. The Harbor has no chat at 1.0, and gifts carry only preset phrases, never free text. Display names are 2–20 characters of letters, numbers and simple punctuation, and some names (like “admin” or “official”) are reserved. Names, tank names and fish names go through a word filter before anyone else sees them. Players who break the rules can be hidden.
The Harbor is for players aged 13 and over. If you are under 13, please don’t switch the Harbor on. If you believe a child has given personal data without permission, contact the developer and it will be deleted.
8. Security
The Harbor is designed to use encrypted connections (HTTPS/WSS), Steam sign-in instead of passwords, and access limited to what each feature needs. No system is perfect; if something goes wrong that affects you, you’ll be told as the law requires.
9. Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top will be updated and, for meaningful changes, the change will be mentioned in the game’s patch notes. If new online features are added, such as chat, this policy will be updated before they go live.
10. Contact
Privacy contact: to be published before release, together with the developer’s name and postal address.
