Genetics

Painted live from the genes

A fish is a small set of genes. Tankbar reads them and paints the fish on the spot, so every combination comes out looking like itself. All of it is procedural code: no image generators and no pre-drawn fish.

Patterns and traits

36 patterns, 8 traits, 1,000 layouts each

Patterns come in four tiers, from simple to showpiece. Many follow real aquarium morphs, like tuxedo guppies and kohaku koi.

Finish and float

Every fish has a finish

Alongside its genes, every fish has a float: a number from 0 to 1 that is fixed for life. Lower is finer. The float sets the finish, which changes how the skin catches the light.

A finer finish gives a fish a little more pearl value, and never less.
Breeding helps: each Flawless parent gives the baby one extra float roll, and the lowest is kept. The Flawless chance goes from 3% to 5.9% to 8.7%.
Every fish has a float and a finish, sealed or not.

Very low floats

Below 0.01 a fish is a Mirror, below 0.001 a Glass Pearl and below 0.0001 Perfect. That is about 1 fish in 233, 2,333 and 23,333.

Flawless: Glass-clear skin with a deep, wet luster. Koi judges would bow.
Gleaming: A bright, even sheen that catches every light.
Bright: Clean, healthy color. A fine fish.
Soft: A gentle satin finish.
Rustic: Velvety and matte, with old-world charm.
Mirror: A faint mother-of-pearl sheen over the scales.
Glass Pearl: A star catchlight in its eye, and its glint breaks into rainbow edges.
Perfect: A soft halo glows behind it in portraits.

Lumpsucker Rare
A ping-pong ball with a suction cup and big dreams.

Anglerfish Rare
Brought its own nightlight. Won’t share.
Lanternfish Common
Covered in tiny lights, like a very small city at night.
Moon Jelly Uncommon
Mostly water, entirely unbothered.
Dumbo Octopus Rare
Flaps its ear-fins like a shy little elephant.

Ember Shrimp Common
Farms bacteria under its own shell. Never has to pop out for lunch.
Cinder Blenny Uncommon
Pops its head out of a hole and makes a face at you.

Soft, pink, and weirdly comfortable in boiling neighborhoods.

Tucks itself into the warm sand like a heated blanket and refuses to get up.

Nebula Reef 3 species · Unlocks at level 22

Comet Koi Epic
Fell out of the night sky into a pond and decided to stay. Still sheds a little stardust.
Pocket Whaleshark Epic
The biggest fish in the sea, politely shrunk to fit your taskbar.
Crown Jelly Epic
Drifts about as if the whole tank were its kingdom. Nobody has had the heart to argue.

Rarity

Six tiers, always shape and color and name

A fish’s rarity is points: points from its species, from its pattern tier and from each trait. More points, higher tier. Every rarity is a gem with a shape, a color and a name, never color alone.

A fish’s rarity also sets how fast it earns pearls.

Egg odds

Every egg, every biome, exactly

Pick a biome to see the odds for each egg you can get there. These figures are computed exactly from the game’s own tables, not sampled. The shop shows the same numbers behind the Odds button on every egg.

Your egg’s fish is decided the moment you buy it, and saved, so reloading the game never rerolls it. While you are signed in to the Harbor, the Mint decides instead (see below).
